Revisiting Pinehurst’s Railhouse deal

I’ve been doing some pontificating, pondering and research on the recent deal arranged by Pinehurst to bring Railhouse Brewery from Aberdeen to Pinehurst.  Prior to Railhouse securing ANY property in Pinehurst, village leaders secured $200,000 in tax dollars from the state to help with renovating the old Pinehurst Resort steam plant on Magnolia Road. For the record — I am not questioning the integrity of the brewery owners or that of the business itself.  I am raising some important questions about the way Pinehurst village government has handled this whole arrangement. ZONING EXEMPTIONS.   On February 28, the village council held two…

Elitist DC pundits: Voters are STUPID

John Harris left The Washington Post  and co-founded the web-only news outlet Politico.com some years back.  I guess The Post gig didn’t let him show off  en0ugh of his true, asinine, arrogant leftist self: Last night on Politico’s live-stream election show, Politico editor-in-chief John Harris highlighted a provocative Politico story about “stupid voters.” The Politico article by reporter Alexander Burns examines poll numbers from voters who still think Obama might be a Muslim, believe that the president can change gas prices, and appear to have conflicting opinions about the war in Afghanistan. The article quotes Tom…

SC state Senate just says NO to BarryO’s health care voodoo

In Columbia, the upper chamber of South Carolina’s legislature has sent a clear, resounding message to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: The South Carolina Senate approved a bill that would make the state the 16th to opt out of covering abortions with taxpayer dollars under the Obamcare health care law that pro-life organizations adamantly opposed because of abortion funding. The South Carolina Senate gave third and final approval Thursday to the bill that will prevent state payment for most abortions under ObamaCare if it is implemented in 2014 as scheduled. Holly Gatling, the director of South Carolina Citizens…

Aahhh! Don’t you just love that leftist big-tent open-minded “tolerance” stuff?

We on the right are frequently criticized by The Left and its comrades in the allegedly mainstream media for pushing “moderates” out of the GOP.  The latest example is the coverage of the retirement announcement by Senator Olympia Snowe (RINO-Maine).  It was stunning AND newsworthy WHEN SHE DID VOTE WITH HER PARTY.   Of course, the media chimed in with a lecture about how we need to tolerate diverse opinions within the ranks of the GOP.  Tragically, GOP leaders often hang their head and nod in agreement with that nonsense. The N&O, the main organ of the NC Democrat Party’s…

Bev’s ESC chief joins ranks of NC’s unemployed

The woman in charge of disbursing unemployment benefits to North Carolinians is, herself,  joining the ranks of the state’s unemployed: Lynn Holmes, the head of the state’s Division of Employment Security, is resigning effective April 15 to pursue new opportunities. That’s fancy political talk for “I got pushed out the door.”   Read on: Holmes announced her resignation in an email to the division’s employees on Thursday. Her four-sentence resignation email said nothing more about her decision to depart. Until recently, the Division of Employment Security was known as the Employment Security Commission. The ESC was…

An opportunity for Pat McCrory with state employees

In 1995 —  just as Jim Hunt was launching his unprecedented reelection campaign for a FOURTH term as NC governor — I broke a story about top Hunt aides and supporters reportedly shaking down prospective state employees and their families for campaign contributions. The state House — then controlled by the GOP — saw an opportunity and launched investigative hearings.  Hunt shook up his staff and sent out an order saying that NO ONE was to solicit campaign contributions from a state employee or his /her family.   Can you say damage control, boys and girls? What the…

Surprise! Bev actually DOES give a ‘frack’

Remember that speech where our esteemed governess — ahem — “joked” about suspending congressional elections so the honorables could do “the right thing” without having to worry about political repercussions? Well, now that Bev is not running for reelection — and doesn’t have to carry water for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro crowd — SHE appears to be ready to do “the right thing” in terms of energy exploration in North Carolina. Leftists are wetting their beds over a “secret trip” Bev took to Pennsylvania — paid for by the energy industry — to learn more about the process of fracking.  …

GOP congressman drinks Occupy / Democrat kool-aid on taxing “the rich”

AAAARRRRGH.  (*That’s my frustration noise.*)  We handed these Republicans a gift in 2010, gave them a mandate and specific instructions on how to proceed, and we get THIS: Freshman Republican Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas thinks he’s figured out a way of nabbing that most elusive of Washington beasts, the Grand Compromise (via Politico): [Crawford] will propose a surtax on millionaires Thursday morning, a crack in the steadfast GOP opposition to extracting more money from the nation’s top earners. The Arkansas Republican will unveil the plan during a local television interview Thursday morning, and plans to…

NC Senate GOP candidate Marcum publicly endorsed a Democrat in 2010

Pinehurst’s John Marcum is one of three GOP candidates seeking the district 29 NC Senate seat this year.  Marcum is working hard to convince GOP activists to vote for him in May.  One problem he may have in doing that is a letter he wrote to our Nobel Prize-winning local paper in 2010 endorsing a Democrat candidate: As people head for the polls, it is well to remember that we were recently denied our right to vote on one of the largest bond issues in the history of Moore County. This was on a…

More on those scary conservative church-going Southerners …

Mainstream media hacks — like Chris Matthews, for example — have been beating that dead horse about religious bigotry below The Mason-Dixon Line.  The old narrative used to be that Southerners would never vote for a Catholic like JFK.  Now, we’re allegedly bigoted against Mitt Romney and his Mormon faith. Let’s check the record.  Newt Gingrich — a practicing Catholic — won South Carolina and Georgia.  Rick Santorum — also a practicing Catholic (and a – *GASP* – Yankee) — won Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama.  Wait.  Aren’t we crackers supposed to be prejudiced against Catholics, the pope, and all…
