Aaaaand the surrender train keeps rolling on

In the 1970s. a perfect storm of libertarians, Christian conservatives, and conservative Democrats came together to shift the GOP from an afterthought to  a force to be reckoned with in North Carolina. Folks with some things in common — and some NOT — came together in a way that benefited all of them (and the state as a whole).  Here we are in 2018. We have two Republican US senators who vote slightly to the right of the average member of the Democrat caucus in their chamber.  We have an ever-shrinking legislative majority, elected on a platform of limited government…

New book offers guide on standing up to the leftist hordes

If you’re a political junkie, you may remember former Virginia House of Delegates member Bob Marshall.  In 2017, his 28-year career in the state legislature was ended by  a transgender Democrat backed by $1.2 million in out-of-state money and an army of out-of-state left-wing activists. Marshall had been in a  safe GOP seat.  His $300,000 campaign treasury was typically enough to get him into the victory circle on election night.  Not THIS time, though. The leftist slander machine came after Marshall full-force.  In his book, he recalls seeing 20 activists from the Human Rights Campaign and SIX Planned Parenthood activists…

Seriously. WHY BOTHER continuing to vote GOP?

In Raleigh, we’ve got ethical lapses galore.  Our GOP majority is coming up with new ways to grow government’s influence — and make money off of the bureaucracy — that even Jim Black and Marc Basnight couldn’t come up with. In DC, our GOP majority is still aiding and abetting the growing of the deficit and the debt.  Instead of actually putting together a budget and living by it, the “honorables” there are still sticking with the tried and true omnibus stopgap spending packages that help the bureaucracy get by three months or so at a time. We’ve been told…

Conservative. Republican. TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.

In 2014, US Senate candidate Thom Tillis told us how he was going to really stick it to Obama when he got to Washington.  (Funny, looking back at that now, I guess he was talking about how he was going to pucker-up extra hard when kissing the now-ex-president’s posterior.  ) The John Locke Foundation has long tried to paint itself as the voice of conservatism in North Carolina.  Yet, its most prominent public faces have been out there calling for very un-conservative things like: more government spending, state-installed GPS trackers on private cars, crossing the aisle to “get things done”,…

#NCSEN: Civitas FLUNKED Thom Tillis in 2010

The details have been scrubbed from The Internet, but — thanks to resources like The Wayback Machine — nothing is ever truly GONE from cyberspace.  The NCGOP took the majority in the General Assembly in 2010.  Thom Tillis got elected speaker as the session opened in early 2011.   But — in Civitas’s 2010 conservatism rankings of legislators — Tillis got a Big Fat F.  Really?  The guy running as the GOP nominee for US Senate, the purported leader of Raleigh’s conservative revolution, got flunked by one of the state’s leading conservative organizations?  Let’s look at some of the votes…
