It takes a special brand of jackass to give their formal notice at work, and then hang around and antagonize the boss, customers and co-workers throughout the duration of said notice period. But THAT is what our Uncle Thom is up to these days. (And he IS *special*, isn’t he?)
Thom told us in the middle of last year that he wasn’t going to run for reelection in 2026. Something about being worn out by Washington and wanting to spend more time with his family. *Surely, it had nothing to do with the polling by the RNC showing him losing to all-comers (including Cooper) as bad as Mike Whatley is losing to Roy Cooper right now.*
If Thom hates Washington so badly, why didn’t he quit last year and allow Mike Whatley to be appointed to finish the term and run for election as an incumbent?
Surely, dear readers, you’ve learned by now it is all about Dirtbag Thom. *Screw the constituents and the home state. Screw the party. Screw the country. It’s him, him, him. *
I’m not sure Uncle Thom has a good idea of what the next step is. (Surely, he’s not just going to go home and get screamed at perpetually by Susan.)
I’ve seen him wearing that Lumbee Indian bolo tie quite a bit. Maybe he thinks those folks will adopt him and make him a casino executive of some kind.
As bad as Tillis has ticked off his colleagues and The White House, I can’t imagine anyone hiring him as a lobbyist.
Tillis spent a good chunk of his first term trashing Trump’s border wall proposal. Nevertheless, Trump endorsed Tillis for reelection in 2020 – helping *our guy in DC* avoid a serious primary and slip past a scandal-damaged Democrat.
Tillis picked up right where he left off with Trump’s return to DC in 2024. He’s sabotaged several Trump appointments and set himself as CNN’s go-to “Republican” Trump critic. 
Uncle Thom’s latest move involves attacking war secretary Pete Hegseth over the resignation of Army secretary (and NC native) Dan Driscoll:
[…] And I assumed, if the Senate had been in session, we would have quickly heard from Sen. Thom Tillis on this. It wasn’t, but he didn’t make us wait.
Tillis took to social media calling for Hegseth to be removed from office. “I want to thank (Army Secretary) Dan Driscoll for his leadership to our Army and service to our country,” Tillis tweeted. “Dan was the right man at the right moment to lead our Soldiers and Army civilians.” He continued listing off what he admired about Driscoll’s service to the country.
“If we had a (Secretary of Defense) who maintained the same priorities and forward-thinking, he would be fighting to retain talented leaders like Dan and the many flag officers he has forced into retirement,” Tillis wrote. “Instead, he is creating a leadership void at the top of our military ranks.” Tillis added that he served eight years on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as the top Republican on the Personnel and Readiness subcommittee.
“I have never witnessed more inept management of the brave men and women who serve our country,” Tillis wrote. “He is intimidated by competence and retreats to ginning up culture wars instead of soberly attending to the vital work of our national defense and the health and well-being of our fighting force.” He then asked Trump to get rid of Hegseth. “I urge the President to find a new leader at the Pentagon who will retain and empower our military talent rather than diminish it,” Tillis concluded. *So, his time on the “personnel and readiness subcommittee” — and surely his many paintball outings — make him an expert on managing military organizations? *
I am the son of a career military officer. I currently reside in the shadow of Fort Bragg and have a lot of acquaintances and friends in the active duty and retired communities. So, I think I have a pretty good read on the situation. Morale among the troops and retirees under Trump seems the highest it’s been in ages.
Folks need to understand something about generals and other flag officers these days. You hear “general” and you think Washington, Lee, Grant, Bradley, Patton, Eisenhower, MacArthur and Westmoreland. Guys like that are few and far between anymore. Your typical general these days got to where he is now thanks to the service academies and a lot of brown-nosing of dirtbag politicians like Tillis. Politics is everything in the pursuit of those stars on your hat and lapel. It sounds like Hegseth might have targeted some of Uncle Thom’s favorite brown-nosers.
I do understand that some of the folks Hegseth pushed out were big fans and proponents of things like DEI as well as everything-LGBTQxyz+. Stuff like that scores points in certain political crowds in Raleigh and DC. But it does little good for the folks currently serving or the country they serve.
