Buckhout, BUSTED.
Thanks to the online gambling craze sweeping the country, sites like Kalshi are now an integral part of our culture.
Kalshi goes out of its way to claim it is NOT GAMBLING. You aren’t betting, but TRADING. In fact, their marketing tells us we are *trading on the future*. You can lay down money on just about anything: sporting events, election outcomes, or what happens next on your favorite reality show. Subjects that you can *invest* in are called *markets.*
Some hiccups have appeared. The guy who runs President Trump’s teleprompter won big money on Kalshi predicting what the president would say in upcoming speeches.
The news today featured two political *celebrities* running afoul of Kalshi’s rules and regulations. Former congressman (and two-legged, walking, talking scandal) George Santos got banned for life from Kalshi.
We also learned that Laurie Buckhout, the GOP nominee in NC’s 1st congressional district, got called on the carpet for her activities on Kalshi. Here are the details:

Unaware? You can’t trade stocks based on insider information. You have the inside track on Yourself and what-you-do. Most people don’t know what you‘re going to do next. (THAT is inside information.)
Betting on a sporting event you’re coaching or playing in can be considered unethical or – at the very least – problematic. Taking action to make sure you or someone else wins money on the event you’re playing or coaching in can be considered criminal. (*Point-shaving* ???)

Here’s a message for the DC folks *handling* Laurie’s campaign — telling her what to say and do every minute and every day. (You guys and gals forced her on us. )
Laurie seems to be *unaware* of a lot of obvious stuff. For the sake of the congressional district, our state, and our nation, get her up-to-speed.
Gambling in all its form are sinful and destructive. This includes casinos, online gambling, and the NC lottery. Note that when citizens are allowed to decide, they often reject gambling laws. See the overwhelming no vote by Lumbees this summer when their so-called leader tried to sneak a casino into Lumberton.

The funniest part is watching Laurie’s simple minded super fans defend the boneheaded action. Imagine Don Davis doing this and people would go crazy. And gas is now $4 a gallon. She will lose
Odd part is that the district is now R+6. This is what happens when too much interference in primaries from the RNC/NCGOP triggers a grassroots backlash. A lot of them may not vote for Davis but it will be interesting to see if the Libertarian candidate gets an abnormal vote percentage.
Laurie Buckhout’s decision to bet on her own congressional race raises serious questions about judgment, ethics, and public trust. Kalshi fined her $2,589.96 and suspended her for three years after determining that her trading violated its rules. Buckhout acknowledged the incident, calling it a “dumb mistake.” While voters can decide how much weight to give the episode, candidates for Congress are seeking positions of tremendous public responsibility. Ethical standards matter regardless of political party. Conservatives often emphasize accountability, personal responsibility, and integrity in government. Those principles are especially important when someone is asking voters to trust them with public office. We needed this to keep the majority and she let people down.
The ones you always have to watch in sports are the ones who bet AGAINST their own team. Those are the ones who deliberately throw games. If someone bets on themselves to win, then they are going to do their best to do so. That said, in politics, it is not wise to open such a can of worms for opponents to use.
My big concern here is how our GOP establishment has opened another can of worms in all of this online betting they have allowed in our state. They should be ashamed of themselves. Big Gambling put a pile of bets in special interest spending in our primaries this year to back establishment hacks over conservatives. One of those was in my own State House district. The Haymaker outed them on it. Republican leaders need to be allowed to call out these special interests who try to buy our primaries out from under real Republicans.
These days i find myself forgetting yesterday and awhile ago, but, i remember 62 yrs ago i wrote my high school senior theme entitled Compulsive Gambling. Why i picked that subject i do not know. However, the take away was and still is that for a percentage of participants, like users of alcohol. Compulsivness will show its face.
