New poll: Don Davis on top in three-way race for NC-01
Phil Berger assured President Trump he had fixed the district so it was a Republican’s to take. The new district went for Trump by 11 points in 2024. *Oh, if only the voters would go along more willingly with those deals concocted in smoke-filled backrooms.*
A new poll from the polling firm GQR has the First Congressional District general election race — as of the last week of June — at Don Davis (D) 45%, Laurie Buckhout (R) 41%, and Tom Bailey (Libertarian) at eight percent.
As you can see, the race has changed little since February: Davis gained 3 points, Buckhout gained 2 points, and Bailey lost one point.
Let’s compare these findings with those of the National Republican Congressional Committee — the campaign arm of US House Republicans led by North Carolina’s Richard Hudson – released in May.
Of course, this polling does not factor in the Libertarian candidate Bailey. The GQR polling shows Davis leading Buckhout in a head-to-head matchup 49-47. But, as we all know, the Libertarian will be there when voters take to the polls in November.
It’s also important to note that we’re in somewhat of a dead zone for political campaigns. People take off on vacation from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Little to no attention is paid to politics. But things take off on a shotgun start following Labor Day weekend.
Keeping control of Congress is essential if we are to stop the Democrats from destroying America, and this is a key seat in accomplishing that objective. That some uninformed Republicans would vote for this “Libertarian” is something that the GOP needs to tackle and educate voters on what he really is. Years ago, the Libertarian Party was dominated by “right Libertarians” who thought a lot like Republicans, but today it has shifted more to the “left Libertarians who think more like Democrats. The last Libertarian presidential candidate was a left Libertarian. The head of the Democrat Socialists of America, of all people, is also involved in a “socialist libertarian” group. Today’s Libertarians are not what they once were. They are no longer the Rand Pauls or Ron Pauls of the world.
Laurie Buckhout was not my choice in the primary, but for the survival of the country, this is one race that all conseervatives need to come together on. A vote for the left Libertarian in this race is really a vote to send Don Davis, who marched with BLM/Antifa in Greenville back to Congress.
I can’t blame local conservatives for not wanting to vote for this DC creature anymore than they want to vote for Whatley. After all, she may not have been your choice but she’s the DC-RNC’s choice and that’s all that matters in NC primaries these days. But local leadership or lack thereof doesn’t help much, either. I can guaran-freaking-tee that if Thomas Hill were still the CD-1 Chairman, things wouldn’t be so dire. He led and won important judicial and state house elections in a district that was a whole lot more blue than it is now.
The district is a mess right now. Fighting. Poor Leadership. Can I please go back to the 3rd disrict?
We need to replace Don, but not going to happen. Way too much drama and fighting.
Thank goodness for people like Judge Tillett and good people from the beach.
How about the other Republicans that ran against Buckhout in the primary start supporting her? The main goal should be to elect Republicans. So you lost the primary we still have a chance for a good Republican to win against a really bad Democrat. You know who you are.
Unfortunately, that’s bound to happen and it’s gonna keep on happening until the President, the RNC, the GOP congressional fund raising entities, and the NCGOP learn their lesson and stop putting their thumbs on local primaries. The CD1 race is further roiled by angry Sandy Smith supporters who watched their candidate fight the good fight against unbeatable odds for three cycles and once it became possible for a Republican to win CD1, a carpetbagger from DC parachuted in (sound familiar?) to overwhelm the locals and secure the nomination.
The involvement of Sandy Smith and her husband with the green energy boondoggle led me to question Sandy Smith from the very first time she showed up in eastern NC politics. Then she exhibited sour grapes by getting behind that left Libertarian. Sorry, but Sandy’s tantrums are not a good reason to not support the GOP nominee.
What is a good or not good reason, has nothing to do with smart politics. I’m no Smith fan either, but the White House/RNC/NCGOP has GOT to stop meddling with primaries. It’s just begging for the wrong general election result and the Dems have the same problem and neither party leadership gets it. People aren’t voting for Smith or against Buckhout, they’re voting against their voice in primaries being muted by the Power class. That’s reality whether anyone likes it or not.
Things are terrible in the district. No direction. Hope it changes soon.

BOTTOM LINE. I do not think there is a good enough reason not to support the GOP nominee if one deeply considers the reality of the predicament we are in.
The extended fist fight within the GOP can resume AFTER we have kicked the commiecrats asses.
That’s unrealistic. Won’t happen. How many time have GOP conservatives heard “we’ll do something after the election/after we take the majority/afterwards….…”. Leadership starts at the top, and the top isn’t interested in doing anything AFTER. The only credible option is for conservatives to organize as a single political entity outside the NCGOP because only from a position of strength can conservatives successfully NEGOTIATE their demands to the NCGOP/RNC, BEFORE, not after an election.
Third parties are not a viable option. That idiot Tucker Carlson is trying to start one nationally. All that does is split the vote so the Democrats win. Carlson is Putin’s poodle, so maybe Putin wants another weakling like Biden back.
the conservative Canadian province of Alberta clearly showed what a third party “accomplishes”. Their Conservative Party went squishy on a whole range of issues, so small “c” conservatives formed the Wild Rose Party, named after the province’s official flower. After a couple of elections, the Wild Rose Party became the dominant party on the right, but in splitting the right of center vote, they allowed the socialist New Democratic Party to win control of the province. Of course, that turned out to be a wakeup call, and the Conservative Party and Wild Rose Party merged using the Conservative Party’s name but under Wild Rose’s leadership.. The next election brought to power the current Premier, Danielle Smith, the most staunchly conservative premier of any Canadian province. Indeed, Alberta is currently in the middle of a referendum campaign on independence from Canada.
In America, if the Democrats took over due to a split on the right of center vote, they would make so many power moves after they gained control, America would be permanently lost. It may be a difficult slog, but the only game in town is pushing for conservative control of the GOP.
