Hey, it could be worse. (Um, couldn’t it?)

It all started with a Thom Tillis vendetta. Now it appears to be ending with some crying in the Harris-Teeter and a public shaming on the House floor.

It all apparently came crashing down today for Thom Tillis protégé Chuck Edwards.  Edwards and Tillis are both ending their political careers at the end of the year – under pressure, of course.  Perhaps they can spend some time hanging out and healing back home. 

Chuck got to stand in front of his colleagues about the whole sordid affair.  Here’s how it went:

Tuesday afternoon, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to officially censure Rep. Chuck Edwards after a bipartisan panel determined that there was “substantial reason to believe” the congressman had fallen afoul of the chamber’s anti-sexual harassment rules.

The House voted 413 to 2 to censure Edwards. Only Rep. Ralph Norman, who is currently urging people to write him in on November’s ballot in the South Carolina Senate race, sided with Edwards in voting against the censure.

Following the vote, Edwards took his public and official rebuke standing in the well of the House floor.

Last month, the House Ethics Committee published a report that recommended Edwards be formally reprimanded for “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers.”

Edwards has disputed that characterization, but agreed to stand down for re-election. Last week, he sent fellow congressman a 22-page letter begging them to vote the other way. Apparently, that move failed.

Edwards is not seeking re-election. State Rep. Jennifer Balkcom was chosen to replace him on the November ballot last month.
