Even Therrible Thom wants to ditch Whatley

Tillis and his wife were instrumental in elevating Michael Whatley to prominence within the North Carolina Republican Party.  That’s what makes it really surprising to see items like THIS floating around in cyberspace:

As state party chairman, Whatley put in a yeoman’s effort to thwart conservative efforts to censure / punish Therrible Thom.  And this is the thanks that Michigan Mike gets.

Some Republicans are growing worried that two key Senate races once considered critical to holding their majority are slipping from their grasp.

In more than a dozen interviews with campaign officials, senators and operatives, there is recognition that North Carolina and Georgia are looking less competitive than the party once anticipated and that decisions need to be made soon about whether to keep investing, even as party officials insist they are not walking away from their candidates there.

Republican senators like North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis, said it was time for the party to make some tough decisions about spending.

“You spend the money where we get Republicans elected,” Tillis said. “I want them to do that now. I mean you don’t spend the money just because you want to help somebody.”

The longtime Republican strategist Karl Rove was more blunt about the two states.

“We’re not going to win either one,” he said Saturday at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. […]

Let’s see — two major statewide races in our state where hand-picked candidates were shoved down our throats and the primaries were basically shut down.  One – the 2024 governor’s race – ended in spectacular failure.  The second – the 2026 Senate race – appears headed that way.

A wide-open primary sure would have been nice.  It would nice to be rallying behind an honest to goodness choice of the people, right about now.

All those assurances that Mark Robinson and Mike Whatley were slam-dunks to win sure are looking empty and ridiculous right now.
