Burr: Resistance to ObamaCare implementation is “the dumbest idea”
From 1972 to 2002, North Carolina was represented in the US Senate by one of the nation’s most preeminent conservatives. Since 2004, we’ve been stuck with Richard Burr — a guy highly impressed with John McCain and Lindsey Graham, who snubs leaders like Rand Paul to be wined and dined by Barry Obama, and frequently says things like THIS:
Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) on Thursday didn’t just reject efforts by a faction of Senate Republicans to shut down the government unless the president’s health care law is defunded — he called it the “dumbest idea” he’d ever heard of.
Burr was asked by Associated Press reporter Andrew Taylor if he was part of an effort, led by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), to block a continuing resolution that would keep the federal government open beyond Sept. 30 if it includes funding for the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
The movement has the support of at least 15 Republican senators: Marco Rubio (Fla.), Ted Cruz (Texas), John Cornyn (Texas), Rand Paul (Ky.), James Inhofe (Okla.), David Vitter (La.), James Risch (Idaho), Roger Wicker (Miss.), Jeff Chiesa (N.J.), John Thune (S.D.), Mike Enzi (Wyo.), Deb Fischer (Neb.), Mark Kirk (Ill.), and Chuck Grassley (Iowa). More than 60 House Republicans signed a letterWednesday to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) urging GOP leadership to take the same stand.
“I think it’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of,” Burr said. “Listen, as long as Barack Obama is president, the Affordable Care Act is going to be law.”
The North Carolina senator pointed out that he was around when Republicans were held accountable for shutting down the government in 1995.
“I think some of these guys need to understand that if you shut down the federal government, you better have a specific reason to do it that’s achievable,” he said. “Defunding the Affordable Care Act is not achievable through shutting down the federal government. At some point you’re going to open the federal government back up, and Barack Obama’s going to be president, and he won’t have signed this illusion of the Affordable Care Act.” […]
Hmm. He sounds a lot like Pat McCrory and Thom Tillis did — until the grassroots browbeat them into supporting the refusal of federal money to fund ObamaCare exchanges.
Polling shows North Carolinians vehemently and overwhelmingly opposed to ObamaCare. It’s arguably the biggest threat out there to our national security.
If you’re going to stop this travesty, you have to get it early. How often does a federally-funded program get killed outright? We’re closing in on the 50th anniversary of the start of The Great Society’s “War on Poverty.”
The left is working overtime to bankrupt our country fiscally and morally. If the alleged conservative party and its leaders refuse to stand up to those efforts and fight them — what are freedom-loving, patriotic Americans to do? Where can they turn?
This example illustrates beautifully, the story on the recent Ellmers thread about how these faux conservatives really view us. Gonna have to stop reading DH, I’ll have a stroke from reading these stories. Here’s another dumb idea for Burr……officeholder repeal legislation. Mostly though, I’m mad at my fellow Republicans….we had some perfectly good primary challengers three years ago but 85% bought into “stand conservative with Richard Burr”.
No, defunding Obamacare is NOT a dumb idea, but renominating a wishy-washy opportunist like Burr is what is the really dumb idea. Already this year, he was for gun control before he was against it, and for amnesty for illegals before he was against it. Can we ever really trust Burr on any issue? And then Tillis would be even worse.
Needless to say, a marshmallow on illegals too.
He’s a Chamber of Commerce Rovian all the way.
There has never been a better reason to vote for and elect Dr. Greg Brannon 2014 US Senate. He’s speaking at the Red State Convention next weekend in NOLA.
I am so disappointed in Burr right now … I cannot believe he would take this attitude, given the overwhelming nonsupport of Obongocare.
Yes, Dr. Brannon is also speaking at the Whispering Pines Country Club tonight at 7 PM. Once we’ve given Hagan the boot, we work to primary Burr.
In the meantime, support Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) at http://www.lee.senate.gov/public/ Help him lead the fight to defund Obamacare.
If, the Republicans do this, then they had better have an alternative healthcare plan waiting in the wings. Prior to Obamacare (Which I Agree is a travesty since it was written by corporate america), everyone was complaining about the cost of healthcare and how it keeps going up. Killing Obamacare should not be the objective. Replacing Obamacare should be the objective! Show America that republicans can do more than just be obstructionist. Do something right for a change! If, you think Obamacare is going to be expensive, wait till you see how much healthcare cost when it is killed without something in place to deal with the rising costs of healthcare. Republicans will regret killing this without an alternative plan. When the costs skyrocket again, the Dems will use it against them! They will say “We told you so”!. Face it people. The Dems want socialized medicine while the Republicans want private healthcare only because of the money they receive from the healthcare sector for elections. None of this. Healthcare, Immigration, or tax reform is really about the people. It’s all about those in Washington and Corporate America.
Add TARP, The Food Bill, and the NDAA. The list goes on and on. From Jesse Helms to Burr is an embarrassment to our state and party.
What we need is term limits. Politicians, like diapers, should be changed often and for the same reason.
And let us never forget, or forgive, Ritchard Burr voted with the Democrats in Decemcer 2010 to homosexualize the Armed Forces of the United States. And to what end? Now more men than women report sexual assualt by these moral reprobates who serving openly. It is pathetic, all courtesy of this Son of A Preacher Man. Bring back Jesse…this poser should be removed from office.
The dumbest idea is that the U.S. Senate has not performed it’s Constitutional duty in passing a budget in how many years???? Now they want another Continuing Resolution!?!??
Great article and it seems like North Carolinians need to tell Burr they do not feel it is a dumb idea. Howsabout everyone who reads this lets their e-mail list know that they need to call or e-mail Burr and tell him we want him to stand with Mike Lee and the rest of the true Conservatives.
We are constantly being betrayed in Washington, but we must not let it get us down. We must never give up, never give up, never, never, never give up!
Looks like Burr is more interested in his job than those who will lose or get fewer hours thanks to Obama Care. Burr is spineless and an embarrassment to NC. I think we need to send Burr to NYC to campaign with Weiner.
Burr has lost my support and future vote unless he walks this nonsense back.
It’s becoming more and more obvious by his votes and his comments that Burr has no intention of running for re-election. He’s just paving the street for his big government friends. He’ll quit the Senate in 2018 and become a lobbyist for his big government allies. What a disappointment he has become. A tragedy for NC and the country.
I fear you’re probably correct. Which is why we need to enact recall legislation. Burr has three more years to seriously damage us. And the NCGOP would have us double-down on that with six years for his friend Tillis?
