Whatley, Tillis, and Trump.
Okay, let’s review. Unquestioning devotion to Donald Trump is
the be-all, end-all for Republicans. (At least, that’s what we’ve been told.). Meanwhile, Trump-endorsed (2020) Thom Tillis has been raging against Donald Trump practically since the guy took office in 2017.
Thom Tillis and his wife Susan have led the political elevation of Michael Whatley in North Carolina since 2018 or so. As NCGOP state chairman, Whatley defended Tillis to the hilt against criticisms from grassroots activists.
We’ve been told that our newly-minted GOP nominee for the US Senate, Michael Whatley was Trump’s choice. *Never mind the reports out there that at least three other people (two congressmen, one daughter-in-law) were asked before the man settled on Whatley. *
Tillis has earned all kinds of coverage from CNN and the other fake news outlets by raging against: the border wall, ICE, immigration crackdowns, and various and sundry Trump legislative proposals and appointees. (*Kinda like the Democrats.*)
Yet, there has not been one peep out of the NCGOP or Trump’s boy in NC (Whatley) about Tillis’s behavior. (If they are chastising Tillis off-the-record and behind the scenes, it’s clearly not working.)
The firing of Kristi Noem took place a matter of days after Tillis threw on-air temper tantrums about her and Stephen Miller. The timing of Noem’s departure made it look like Trump got intimidated by Tillis into making the move. So, of course, Tillis’s balls got bigger and he amped up his attack on Miller.
Mike Whatley is Trump’s guy. (*At least, that’s what we’re told.*) Why is he not standing up for Trump and Trump’s people? Why is he standing quietly by while Tillis does Chuck Schumer’s dirty work for him?
In politics, silence often equals agreement. I think that’s very likely what we have going on here. Whatley thinks his political mentor – Tillis – is right on the money. He’ll take over this duty from Tillis IF he manages to get past Roy Cooper in November.
Tillis and his runaway mouth could provide a Sista Souljah moment for Whatley. For those old enough to recall, Sista Souljah was a mouthy, race-baiting rapper popular in 1992 when Bill Clinton first ran for president. Clinton spoke out fiercely against her and consequently inoculated himself against Republican accusations of radicalism. Nobody of any consequence would be upset if Michael Whatley went public with a demand that 
Thom Tillis — this year’s Sista Souljah — sit down and STFU. It would certainly help Whatley with his very skeptical base.
Once again, the selling point for the GOP nominee will likely be: “Hey, he’s better than a Democrat.”
Though, given what we’ve seen thus far, you have to look at Tillis’s outrage-after-outrage and Whatley’s conspicuous silence about said outrages, and respond with: “Is he, really?”
Tillis is going to wreck the NC Republican Party.
NC GOP wrecked far earlier, unfortunately.
Tillis may be adding to the misery, but 2026 is not the year the NC GOP wrecked.
Local gop factions are split in major ways. Numerous counties have conservatives battling with ‘mods’ and liberals within the party.
WHO believer Berger is the top of our party? Should be in his position; yet look at the Tues results from his home county. Across the state would be similar I suspect.
WHO is NC’s leader in the GOP? Do we even have one?
Certainly not Tillis nor Budd. Is Budd breathing? Tillis never came close to a 50% majority vote.
We can’t carry the Council of State any longer?
Dems will quickly state Coop is their guy and he is. He may likely win Senate seat and bring others along down ticket.
The NC GOP convention has been a sham for years and now we pay the price. We’ve lost Govt, Lt Gov, AG, Educ and have a Auditor that plays/dabbles in elections (Berger/Page).
The major place Whatley could make himself a hero to the base right now would be to help jerk Tillis into line on the SAVE Act. Is he smart enough to try to do that? Whatley very badly needs something to bring the GOP base around for him..
