Tracking the early-voting horse race
We don’t have enough info available to tell specifically you where all these early votes are going, but we do have some nice online tools to help you see exactly who’s showing up thus far.
Let’s start off with John Locke’s Vote Tracker. This page allows you to see things on a big-picture statewide view or in a more compact, county-by-county view.
Statewide, it looks like Democrats have really got their stuff together in the first two days of early voting. A total of 437,217 voters have shown up at polling places from Murphy to Manteo since the start of early voting on October 15.
Here’s the partisan breakdown for the folks who have showed up thus far:
Keep in mind – the above chart does not indicate HOW someone voted. It only reflects their registration.
Here’s what we have thus far on the state’s congressional races:
Districts 1,4, 7, 11 and 13 appear to be leading the pack in early voting at this stage. District 1 is the high-profile race between Don Davis (D) and Laurie Buckhout (R).
District 4 is currently held by Valerie Foushee (D). District 7 is currently held by David Rouzer (R).
District 11 features the high-profile contest to replace Chuck Edwards between Jennifer Balkcom (R) and Jamie Ager (D).
District 13 is currently held by Brad Knott (R).
Let’s look at the turnout thus far for the state Senate races. Vote tracker shows you all 50 districts, but we’re only going to highlight the top FOUR:
- District 20 – 13,592 – currently held by Natalie Murdock (D)
- District 49 – 13,065 – currently held by Julie Mayfield (D)
- District 8 – 12,491 – currently held by Bill Rabon (R)
- District 23 – 12,237 – currently held by Jonah Garson (D)
Let’s move over to see what’s happening in the NC House races. Vote Tracker only shows us the Top 25 performers of all 120 districts. We’re going to highlight only the TOP SIX performers thus far:
- District 19 – 6,510 – currently held by Charlie Miller (R)
- District 114 – 6,198 – currently held by Eric Ager (D)
- District 29 – 6,151 – currently held by Vernetta Alston (D)
- District 17 – 6,097 -currently held by Frank Iler (R)
- District 54 – 6,021 -currently held by Robert Reives (D)
- District 117 – 5,953 – currently held by Jennifer Balkcom (R)
As you may know, Jennifer Balkcom and Eric Ager‘s brother Jamie are going head-to-head for the 11th congressional seat in Congress.
With the activity around the districts held by Miller, Rabon, and Iler – something interesting appears to be happening around Brunswick County.
Vote Tracker also shows us that folks between 61 and 80 years of age appear to be dominating early-voting turnout thus far.
We’ve still got a long way to go.
