Pessimism, cynicism and the fundraising blues

I’m often told I am way too cynical about this politics and election stuff.  I always respond to that with: “Give me something to root for and fight for.”

But it is amazing the level of cynicism I am encountering out there from folks who are normally pointing fingers at ME.  I haven’t seen this level of frustration and anger among the troops over here on the right side in a looooooong time.

Mike Whatley recently made a poorly-publicized trip to Pinehurst to press-the-flesh.  I thought being HERE – this late in the campaign – was strange.  Pinehurst and Moore County is some of the reddest, most pro-GOP territory in the state.  A GOP statewide candidate should already have this place nailed down and should be working elsewhere that is more competitive.

I asked a friend in the senior ranks of the local GOP about the Whatley visit this late in the game.  The reply was interesting, to say the least:

“The campaign was under the impression that folks on the party’s right flank – especially here – are not that happy with Michael.”

(*I wonder where they got that idea?*)

Seriously – the conservative v. RINO infighting has heated up down here, as it has in many other counties. It’s been heated at the state level for years and now – from what we can see — appears to be spilling over into local parties.

That leads me to THIS:

I checked in with a friend from this area who is known to occasionally cut a big check to Republicans in Raleigh, and he told me YES, indeed there was more to be told:

“This thing has been out there for at least a month. And they do this three days before the event was to happen?  They were getting poor response to the invitations sent out.  Clearly, it got so bad that it wasn’t worth having.  That’s really something to have this happen in a county that wealthy that is normally enthusiastically Republican.  It speaks volumes about the sad state of the local party and the state party.”
