Campaign 2014: Here come the judges!
North Carolina saw a more aggressive than usual Supreme Court election in 2012 with the reelection of Justice Paul Newby(R). Well-placed sources tell me that jockeying for the 2014 NC Supreme Court races is already underway.
State Appeals Court Judge — and Republican — Robert N. Hunter, Jr. (not to be confused with Appeals Court Judge, and Democrat, Robert C. Hunter) has filed paperwork to run for the state’s highest court.
Chief Justice Sarah Parker will be retiring. Current Justice Mark Martin (R) will be running for that vacancy. Justice Robin Hudson (D) has not yet filed the paperwork to reopen her campaign committee — fueling speculation that her seat might be third vacancy on the court.
Justice Cheri Beasley (D) — appointed by former Gov. Bev Perdue in December 2012 — has filed to stand for election in 2014.
I have heard that leftist Robin Hudson may run against Martin for the Chief Justice seat.
Parker reaches retirement age before the election, so Martin should be the incumbent by appointment then. Amazingly, one or more Republican twits filed legislation in the General Assembly to allow Parker to serve out her term in spite of being over mandatory retirement age. These legislators are either morons or traitors.
