House Majority Leader: Taking Care of HIS business?
We gave former state Rep. Jamie Boles — a funeral home operator by trade — grief for introducing several pieces of legislation specifically benefiting people who own and operate funeral homes. (Like Boles.)
Jamie defended the practice by saying people came to him with the proposed legislation because he was familiar with the funeral industry. Even so, it just looks bad to have your name on something that clearly offers a direct benefit to YOU.
According to this article, current House majority leader Brenden Jones owns a car dealership and a funeral home in Columbus County.
Interestingly, we turned up a few nuggets in a review of Jones’s body of work in Raleigh. In the list of Bills introduced by Jones (according to the NCGA website), there is HB 1003 aka *Board of Funeral Service Modifications.*
There is also HB 991, which apparently establishes a Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team.
We also found – on Jones’s Introduced List – a few things related to the car sales industry. For instance, there was HB 421, an Act to Clarify Various Motor Vehicle Dealer Laws.
There was also HB 406, also meant to clarify motor vehicle dealer laws.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be have a hand in writing or rewriting the state regs and / or laws governing your business?
As with Boles, we’re just making observations based on facts supplied by state government. At the very least, it all looks a little unseemly.
