Dark gambling money attacking incumbent GOP state senator in Cabarrus County
We’re getting a slight variation on the formula now. Other instances we’ve found have involved the protection of a GOP incumbent. Over in Cabarrus County, the American Conservative Fund is siding with a recently-ousted state representative over an incumbent state senator.
Former Rep. Kevin Crutchfield is going after incumbent senator Chris Measmer in Cabarrus County’s senate district 34. Judging from the mailers we’ve seen, the American Conservative Fund prefers Crutchfield over Measmer.
Notice the top-left corner: “Paid for by American Conservative Fund.”
Okay, let’s recap. We’ve seen this group intervening in primaries in the following counties:
- Johnston
- Lee
- Moore
- Rockingham
- Guilford
- Cabarrus
There are bound to be more. Please let us know if you see them in your county.
The best we can tell — the major funders of this group are out of the Boston and DC areas. We have to ask: Why is this apparent gambling interest so interested in the North Carolina General Assembly? WHAT do they think their money is going to buy them?

These scumbags are involved in attacks on conservative Rep. Keith Kidwell (R-Beaufort) where they are supporting a former Democrat who was a major contributor to liberal Democrat State Senator Marc Basnight, and who has an F rating from the NRA… They are also involved in the open seat 1st Senate District being vacated by Sen. Bobby Hanig who is running for Congress.. They are opposing conservative former Superior Court Judge Jerry Tillet, and backing a big farmer who was recruited by anti-gun RINO Rep. Jimmy Dixon on behalf of Phil Berger.
It is a travesty that Republican Party organizations are prohibited from fighting these hostile takeovers. We need to amend our Plan of Organization to allow party organizations to engage against these types of attacks.
