UNC-Chapel Hill scrubs use of race / gender from admissions, hiring policies
Thanks to the US Supreme Court, some sanity may be injected into the operations at the state’s flagship university:
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that gutted affirmative action, effectively ending race-conscious admissions, the University of North Carolina has voted to bar the use of “race, sex, color or ethnicity” in hiring and admissions.
“I’m confident that we’re taking all the necessary steps to fully comply,” UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said on Friday after the Board of Trustees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill approved the update
n a three-page resolution, approved by the board’s audit committee on Wednesday, it is stated that there will be no “preferential treatment” to any individual or group on the basis of race, according to the News & Observer of Raleigh.
The conservative majority Supreme Court in June rejected race-conscious admissions in colleges and universities by a vote of 6-3.
The opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, said UNC and Harvard violated the equal protection clause.
“Both programs lack sufficiently focused and measurable objectives warranting the use of race, unavoidably employ race in a negative manner, involve racial stereotyping, and lack meaningful end points,” the opinion states.
UNC trustees have been in discussion of how to transition after last month’s ruling that deems the old admissions considerations would violate the 14th Amendment.
“What we’re trying to do is be proactive with this and make sure that we’re in compliance and that we’re providing equal protection,” trustee Marty Kotis said.
Earlier this month, UNC announced they would provide free tuition for in-state undergraduates whose families make under $80,000 per year.
“Our responsibility to comply with the law does not mean we will abandon our fundamental values as a university,” Guskiewicz said in a statement. “We are and will remain passionately public, and we will ensure that every student who earns admission to Carolina can come here and thrive.”
It’s my understanding THIS pinhead made THIS “free tuition” decision all by his lonesome. 
WITHOUT BOARD APPROVAL. So, we’re just going to get a little more creative in how we dish out special favors to favored groups, eh?
A family income of $80,000 doesn’t make you the Rockefellers. College tuition is outrageously high all across the board. Families of all colors scrimp and scratch to save every penny to try and pay for their kids’ studies. The cost of college keeps going up, but the return-on-investment freezes or falls. If you’re really interested in making it more “accessible,” why not seek out ways to make it more AFFORDABLE?
Let’s hope the UNC trustees are finally serious about this. Don’t forget that the trustees–all RINO Republicans–defended race-based admissions in the Supreme Court until the bitter end. Now that the Court ruled against them they say they will put a stop to this nonsense. I can forgive their blatant hypocrisy if they actually do abolish the illegal race-based admissions policy they long supported.
We need to get the legislative leadership to stop selling board seats to their buddies and start appointing principled conservatives with backbones who will clean up the wokeness at our universities.
UNC trustees finally serious? That ship sailed long ago. Faith in GOP appointees? There’s no credibility in that either.
Concerning public education: I suggest we rally around any good school board members out there. They need active public support. Other than that, the public seems ill served on all fronts. Parents (and citizens in general) need to address this problem themselves. We can’t depend on the system to correct this awful situation.
I admit the UNC trustees have no credibility and have been totally two-faced on the race-based admissions policy. Only RINOs would support this policy all the way to the Supreme Court and then turn around and say they oppose it after the Court outlaws the policy. All we can do now is hold their feet to the fire and demand they follow-through on their “new” promise to do the right thing. And also, demand your legislators to quit appointing squirmy RINOs to these critical UNC boards.
From the 2022 NC GOP Platform: “9. We encourage both state and federal governments to help prospective students understand the real costs of lending and allow students to discharge their debts according to market principles. We support economic assistance for students that comes from both private and public sources using market lending principles.” Fidelity? Adherence? Real world consequences?
