Growing pains, internal strife roiling Republicans in NC’s new First Congressional District
We were understandably intrigued when the following was shared with us:
(For those who don’t know, *Browny* is Dare County Republican Party chairman Browny Douglas.)
We have a lot of fans and readers in the parts of our state that now make up the First and Third congressional districts. I decided to poke around a little and see what some of my friends there — who are usually in-the-know — actually KNOW about this message from the Dare County chairman.
The current First District chairman for the NCGOP is Harvey West. Many who have been involved with state politics and the North Carolina Republican Party are aware of West’s past brush with the criminal justice system.
Dare County – which for many years was part of the state’s Third Congressional District – was added to the First Congressional District as part of legislators’ recent redistricting efforts. Interestingly, we understand that Third District chairman – and former state GOP vice-chairman — Michele Nix is now a resident of the First Congressional District.
Folks familiar with this matter in The First District tell us that complaints voiced by Dare County sheriff candidate Teddy Daniels (R) got the ball rolling. Daniels was apparently inspired to speak up when he learned West moderated a candidate debate held in the area recently.
Daniels has published a number of posts deeply critical of West on his sheriff campaign Facebook page.
Our sources tell us a number of local officials have pledged to resign party posts and decline to help the party if West is allowed to remain in the chairman’s post. We’re told there are also quite a few local activists and leaders who are also threatening to resign their posts and not help the party if West is pushed out of his chairmanship.
Our sources tell us state GOP leaders are declining to intervene and leaving the decision to GOP officials within the First District.
Thanks to the First District’s new configuration, it is much more Republican-leaning and incumbent Democrat Don Davis is seen as much more vulnerable. There is a five-candidate GOP primary field that is drawing national attention.

“Brush with the law” – you have got to be kidding me! Pleading guilty as a 28 year old man for 10 acts of indecent liberates and sexual acts against 3 little girls – they were all under 16! PLEAD GUILTY! Served 6 years and was on the sex registry. This is NOT a High school senior that slept with his freshman girl friend. This is a grown man and former LEO that assaulted litte girls!! That is not a “brush with the law!”
