“Office of The FORMER speaker.” (Are you serious ????)

I am afraid it is quite serious.  Here’s the word on that from Washington:  Two aides to former House Speaker John Boehner are earning over $10,000 a month in his taxpayer-funded “Office of the Former Speaker,” according to congressional records. Both longtime aides, Amy Lozupone received $26,414 for work done in November and December as Boehner’s administrative assistant, and Michael Sommers was paid $22,185 during the same period. Boehner stepped down at the end of October. Rep. Paul Ryan was elected to replace him. Boehner’s office opened in November. The Office of the Former Speaker is an official office that…

NC-03: Lil’ Guv says Taylor Griffin ”better” than Walter Jones

Yep.  The campaign spokesman for Renee Ellmers — who also happens to be Gov. Pat McCrory’s nephew — weighed in with that *expert analysis* in the drive-by media this morning: A North Carolina Republican trying to unseat a longtime congressman has said thanks, but no thanks to a $500 campaign contribution from U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers’ husband. Brent Ellmers, a surgeon from Dunn, N.C., contributed the money online to Taylor Griffin’s campaign on the last day of the 2015 fund-raising year, according to financial disclosures filed by the candidate with the Federal Election Commission. Griffin is running against 10-term incumbent…

FreedomWorks: Two more years of Walter, please.

FreedomWorks, one of the nation’s leading Tea Party organizations, has formally endorsed congressman Walter Jones for renomination and reelection in North Carolina’s 3rd congressional district.  Here’s what they had to say: This week, FreedomWorks PAC announced its endorsement of Rep. Walter Jones in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. Jones has long been an independent thinker in Congress, never content to toe the party line. He was one of the 25 Republicans who voted against John Boehner’s reelection as Speaker of the House, and has never shown any qualms about going against leadership. For the past three years, Jones has won our…

#nc-03: Jones, Syria and THE REST OF THE STORY

We’ve heard all kinds of coverage of this Syria refugee bill pushed through the Congress in response to the Paris terror attacks.  We heard about 47 Democrats joining the Republican majority, while TWO Republicans voted NO.  Who were the two?  Steve King of Iowa and Walter Jones of North Carolina.   Wait a minute.  Those two are hardcore anti-amnesty warriors.  They’re usually pretty good on immigration issues.  What gives? Jones’s primary opponents jumped on the drive-by coverage QUICK: Have Jones and King gone over to The Dark Side ????  According to Glenn Beck’s The Blaze — one of the few…

NC-03: Wow. Taylor Griffin IS being bankrolled by Wall Street & K Street.

We’ve written extensively about this heightened environment of influence-buying in American politics.  Over in the Third Congressional District GOP primary, we’ve got a clear example of deep-pocketed influence-peddlers in DC and New York trying to buy a congressional seat. We took a look at the Griffin campaign’s October 15 quarterly report to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC).  Here are some of the interesting things we found: Total Receipts – $117,424 Total from Individuals – $105,424 Total Itemized from Individuals – $103,300 Total Contributing (Itemized) – 76 individuals  Total from PACS – $12,000  List of donors includes 17 lobbyists, 15 attorneys…

#nc-03: A split decision on Paul Ryan

Walter Jones has clearly not had John Boehner as a part of his fan club.  There’s been evidence that Boehner and sources close to him have been behind recent primary challenges to Jones. Jones has also been credited with having a major impact on Kevin McCarthy’s decision to back out of the race for speaker.  Now, Jones has tossed in his two cents on speaker-in-waiting Paul Ryan — using words like “bully.” Jones has two primary challengers this year.  One of them — Taylor Griffin — sounded off on Ryan on Facebook this week (Click image below to enlarge):

Paul Ryan. WHY ???????????

Conservatives just helped oust a speaker who was okay with the Wall Street bailout, debt ceiling increases, and amnesty for illegals.  Now, they and the rest of the House are ready to replace said speaker with another guy who pretty much has the same positions on those issues! Mark Meadows appears to be getting on board with Paul Ryan.  (We know he reads this blog faithfully. He’s commented here before. It would be nice if he would comment on this post — explaining why it is he can “live” with Speaker Ryan.)  Ryan — coming off that *fantastic* performance in…

#NC-03: Jones beating Griffin in money chase

The third quarter campaign finance reports have been filed with the Federal Elections Commission.  If the numbers in those reports are any indication, Walter Jones will be celebrating in November. Primary challenger Taylor Griffin reports raising $117,424 through September 30.  His report indicates he has $105,953 in cash-on-hand as of September 30. Jones reports raising $200,421 through September 30.  He shows $179,443 cash-on-hand as of September 30.   This is a rematch from 2014, where Griffin came close to upsetting the challenger.  In 2014, Griffin raised a total of $323,554. In 2014, Jones raised a total of $703,382.  Griffin benefited…
