#ncga: Asheville-area senator tosses her hat in ring for Lt.Gov in 2020

One of the more outspokenly liberal voices on Jones Street will be trying to fill Dan Forest’s chair after he vacates it to run for governor. Here’s state senator Terry Van Duyn (D-Buncombe) making the announcement on Twitter today:   (Here’s the link to the video.)

#ncga: What did Bob Steinburg KNOW about aide’s thievery?

As Bob Steinburg and his inner circle rage on about an alleged political conspiracy against his top legislative aide and campaign manager, we’re going to stick with documentation and cold-hard FACTS. Team Steinburg’s decision to go after the Dare County district attorney who prosecuted Diana London has resulted in the prosecutor himself releasing all of his notes related to the plea deal he struck with London. One of the more interesting tidbits from the D.A.’s document dump?   In a timeline of the case created by the prosecutor, it is revealed that Steinburg himself attended a business meeting between London…

#ncga: Team Steinburg preps for war against Dare Co. DA

With most politicians, if an aide runs afoul with the law, the pol and the aide quietly go their separate ways and the subject gets changed.  Bob Steinburg isn’t like most people.  *EVERYBODY — and I mean EVERYBODY — is out to get him.* (And he’s going to GET them right back.)  Diana London — Steinburg’s legislative assistant and campaign manager — pleaded guilty this week to misdemeanor larceny.  She has to pay $10,000 of the total $25,000 in restitution by THIS Monday or risk some jail time. Steinburg responded to the plea with a not-so-subtle threat against the Dare…

The tale of the tape: Steinburg’s aide admits “… I stole”

The Dare County woman who works for senator-elect Bob Steinburg’s as his legislative assistant and campaign manager ( as well as for his basketball promotion company) pleaded guilty earlier this week to misdemeanor larceny.  Among other things — that include supervised and unsupervised probation as well as a suspended jail sentence – Diana London is required to pay $25,000 restitution to her victims. Senator-elect Steinburg said post -plea that he still has “full confidence” in his aide and will continue to employ her.  He also launched into a tirade against the Dare County prosecutor — questioning both his integrity and…

#ncga: Steinburg’s Girl Friday pleads GUILTY

That’s what my moles in the Dare County Courthouse tell me went down yesterday. Diana London — who works as senator-elect Bob Steinburg’s legislative aide, his top campaign aide, and for his Wolfestein basketball tournament promotion business — was indicted by a Dare County grand jury earlier this year on one felony count of embezzlement. The case was meant to go to court during Steinburg’s general election campaign against Democrat Cole Phelps, but was continued until THIS WEEK — well after the voters had their say. According  to courthouse sources, London pleaded guilty today to misdemeanor larceny. Here were the…

#ncga: Heck, let’s allow EVERYBODY to vote!

For all their caterwauling and boo-hooing over the integrity of our elections process, legislative Democrats sure seem hell-bent on introducing even more potential opportunities for mischief into the mix. House Bill 1115, entitled “Let North Carolina Vote Act”, got introduced this week by a gaggle of House Democrats — led by Orange County’s Graig “I am sooooooo ashamed of my whiteness” Meyer.  The bill establishes “automatic” voter registration for anyone and everyone who: renews or obtains a North Carolina driver license, or registers for classes at a North Carolina community college or state university.  (Lots of folks who aren’t North Carolina…

Stein-ball in Asheville: A not so full house.

There hasn’t been  too much crowing about the inaugural effort of senator-elect Bob Steinburg’s Wolfestein Group.  Steinburg loves to brag about himself and his work.  It’s not like him to go so quiet.  As you know from reading our site, the visitcurrituckobx.com Battle in The Blue Ridge was sponsored with $50,000 in seed money from Currituck County taxpayers.  The college basketball tournament, held in Asheville in the state’s far west quadrant, was meant to promote tourism in Currituck County (in the state’s far eastern quadrant). Neither ESPN  nor Fox Sports were interested in airing the three day event.  (ESPN wouldn’t…

#ncga: Leadership, lobbyists conspiring to topple Folwell?

I’ve always suspected that what WE want runs a distant second to what the deep-pocketed Raleigh lobbyists want.  This kerfuffle between the hospital lobby and treasurer Dale Folwell over reforming the state health plan is starting to confirm those suspicions. We told you earlier about a bill being circulated among the House majority to limit Folwell’s power regarding the management of the state health plan. The bill prevents Folwell from making any changes  to the standard operating procedure regarding the plan until the end of 2021.  It also forms a study committee that will issue a report on the “sustainability”…

#ncga: The Great Timmy Telephone Tap Terror

You know life is not so going so well when people are scared to talk to you for fear of ending up part of a criminal investigation. Taking a page from John  Hood — The great English philosopher Ray Davies once opined that “Paranoia will destroy ya.” Confession:  I haven’t set foot in the legislative building since about 1995. ( I met with then-speaker Harold Brubaker who took me onto the House floor for a quick tour.) Despite my long absence from that building, I think I’ve established that I’m living rent-free in a lot of the heads that work and…

#ncga: Gun Lobby targets Bill Rabon

Grass Roots North Carolina, one of the more influential Second Amendment groups in the state, is baring its fangs and showing its claws at senator Bill Rabon (R-Brunswick), chairman of the powerful Senate Rules Committee: […] It’s a sad day in Raleigh when politicians who claim to be pro-gun act as though they are anything but. It’s an even sadder day when an honest citizen, petitioning her Representatives, is driven to tears after telling the Senator that she would relay his position on HB-746 (Permitless Concealed Carry and more) to other gun rights voters. Yet, that is exactly what happened…
