#ncpol: About those Civitas polls …

*”Hey, if the flagship political organ of The Pope Empire says things are bad for Republicans, THAT IS NEWS.”* Something like that runs through the mostly-empty heads in driveby media newsrooms (and Democrat campaign offices) across the state every time Civitas releases something that might not be considered music to the ears of Dallas and his grandpa. The latest piece of “joyful” news the drivebys are trumpeting is a Civitas poll showing Mark Harris — vanquisher of the despicable Robert Pittenger — down by SEVEN POINTS to his pre-pubescent Democrat challenger. I’ll have to admit — given who his top…

#ncga: We’ve got legislator rankings!

Granted, they’re from Civitas and the American Conservative Union.  Granted conservatism is in the eye of the beholder.  One man’s conservative is another  man’s liberal.  But, here we go. For 2017, now-former Rep. Chris Millis was the only House member to get a perfect conservative rating from Civitas.   Three of the House’s top five conservatives for that year — Millis, John Blust, and Jeff Collins — will not be around after November 2018.  Talk about a sobering reality. For 2018, however, Civitas has handed out a bunch of perfect ratings.  I dug deeper and found that they based those…

#ncpol: Rabies tests on tap for NCPolicyWatch crew?

His buddy is moving on to bigger things. But Rob Schofield is still here, foaming at the mouth over a web site he helped put out of its misery: […] Art Pope’s Civitas Institute is out with another “you can’t make this stuff up” doozy this morning. The fun folks who gave North Carolina an anti-Semitic online hate rag known as the Carolina Plotthound are now attacking that nefarious commie plot, Giving Tuesday.[…] So, linking to an article on another site critical of an elected official, who happens to be Jewish, qualifies one as “an anti-Semitic online hate rag” ???  Well, Rob has published a…

Civitas FOR ‘redistributional welfare’ ?

That’s what our friends from Moore Tea Citizens say:  The NCGA just created a new welfare program and Bob Luebke is promoting it on the Civitas Website. The program uses the NC tax system to take money from North Carolinians with their own financial struggles and family heartache, and gives it to the selected group of families with “special needs.” From the program’s online brochure: The parent or legal guardian is provided a bank account to hold scholarship funds for an eligible student to be used for qualifying education expenses. Recipients will receive quarterly deposits for a total not to…

WHO wants to “run” Civitas?

We’d heard scuttlebutt for some time that incumbent Civitas president & ceo Francis DeLuca was looking for a chance to make a run for it. DeLuca made it official a few days ago with his announcement of a “Spring 2018 […] retirement.” The ink had barely dried on DeLuca’s letter when this got tossed out into cyberspace:  Civitas is Latin for civics.  Unlike most traditional think tanks, Civitas Institute emphasizes educating the public and mobilizing the grassroots movement by providing them the information, skills, and tools to effectively engage with elected and public officials to help successfully implement public policies…

#ncpol: Oh, look. A Poll !!!

Civitas has released some polling on the political environment in North Carolina.  (I, for one, am surprised that they had the courage to do it — given their total submission to and beatdown by Bert & Ernie not long ago.)  Here are some of their more interesting findings: Fifty percent of respondents believe North Carolina is headed in the “wrong direction.”  (Thirty-three percent think all is well.) Democrats lead Republicans 39-35 percent on a generic state legislature ballot. Donald Trump has 47 percent job approval. The western, Piedmont, and northeastern regions of the state are the most pro-Trump. Roy Cooper…

Team Pope euthanizes The Plott Hound

Caving in to the hysterical demands of North Carolina politics’ very own Bert & Ernie is akin to admitting to the world that celebrity aerobics guru Richard Simmons kicked your ass.  But that is what has happened.  The empire of alleged conservative godfather Art Pope has tucked tail and run off into the night submissively in response to over-the-top attacks from Goodmon family empire attack dogs Rob Schofield and Chris Fitzsimon. Here’s ex-Marine Francis DeLuca, boss at The Civitas Institute, a Pope empire subsidiary, waving the white flag and presenting his sword: We regret that an error in judgment was…

N&O’s ‘Toilet Boy’ joins Blinky & Scowly in piling on Plott Hound

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. — Martin Niemoller   In the 1950s, liberals protested angrily at what they saw as Joseph McCarthy’s efforts to lump them in with Communists and other enemies of America. #ncga: Effectiveness, Shmeffectiveness.

Civitas is out with their Conservative Effectiveness ratings for the 2017 North Carolina General Assembly. First of all, I’m taking a little bit of an exception with some of the things they’re calling “conservative” votes.   For instance, the resolution on the Convention of States DOES have some credible conservative arguments against it.   OH, and Jimmy Dixon’s protection for the big corporate hog farmers?  Supporting THAT is hardly a conservative vote. Oh, and it’s arguable to call overriding Cooper’s veto of the budget “conservative.” It was loaded with PORK and defended by Republicans with a lot of the same class-warfare rhetoric…

Civitas thins the herd over on Jones Street

What a difference a month makes.  Last month, EVERYBODY  was getting perfect scores from Civitas.  A month later, after the solar scam has come and gone, there are only SEVEN House members with perfect scores of 100:  Mark Brody, George Cleveland, Carl Ford, Larry Pittman, Jeff Collins, Michael Speciale, and Chris Millis.   (Kelly Hastings gets a score of 100, but he’s disqualified for taking a walk when the solar goons’ bill came up for a vote.  No profile in courage there.  Nosirree.) What changed in a month?  The solar giveaway bill that warmed the heart of every lobbyist in…
