Roberts passes. (Game ON?)
Chief Justice John Roberts has allowed the lower court ruling on North Carolina’s congressional districts stand. Soooooo – it’s now a certainty we won’t be voting for Members of Congress in March.
The congressional primary will be moved to June 7. We will be voting for president, and everything else, still on March 15. Two important changes with the new congressional voting?
- NO RUNOFFS: You can win a party’s nomination for the US House with a plurality now. No majority needed. No 40 percent needed. I don’t know about you, but I am not thrilled with the idea of someone who only pulls 28 percent of the primary vote getting the golden ticket to the general election. Defenders of this change cite a desire to save money. (I wish that extended to other areas of governance.) In reality, it is an incumbent protection measure. The more people who pile into a primary, the more benefit to the better-known incumbent.
- RUN FOR THIS AND THAT. We’re getting our very own LBJ rule. For
the June 7 primary, there is now a lot less risk for current elected officials in other offices who may want to roll the dice on a two year trip to DC. Observers are seeing this as a special deal for Phil Berger, Jr. , a candidate for Court of Appeals, who lost a heated primary for Congress in the 6th district in 2014.We’re already hearing about some other political celebrities eyeing runs for Co
ngress in June. Sources tell me former Mecklenburg legislator Ric Killian is looking hard at running in the new 13th district. (George Holding, the current rep for the 13th, has said he’s going after Renee Ellmers in the 2nd if this map stands.) Killian has Tea Party ties. He had a respectable conservative record in the state House before quitting to run for the open 9th district congressional seat in 2012. We’re also hearing that state senator Andrew Brock is eyeing a run in the 13th.Word hit the drive-by media today that state Rep. Susi Hamilton
(D-Wilmington) may jump into the Democrat primary for the 7th district in June.
I am expecting more Jones Street types to roll the congressional dice before this is all said and done.
The prospect of things getting tied up by further lawsuits is still very real. Democrats are using some pretty angry language in relation to the new map. So, the drama here may not be over.
After all this…. Will the RINOS finally get conservative? Or will they continue to lie and use more smoke and mirrors to distort their horrific voting records. I would bet they will just pretend to be against things, pretend to put up a fight and fold like a bunch of cheap suits…
Smoke and Mirrors is the correct answer. I’m in Ellmers district. Her Liberty Score on Conservative Review is 52% (F). If Holdings runs against her, we’re no better. His score is 74% (C). Both are RINO’s and will say anything to get re-elected. I was so hoping to cast my vote for Jim Duncan.
Does Duncan live outside the new lines?
He is now in the 6th.
This sucks on so many levels. The lack of runoffs is horrendous. The ability to run in multiple races also stinks.
If Berger, Jr. runs for Congress and stays in that race instead of going for Court of Appeals, then a liberal will automatically win the court seat. That should be a huge issue against him in the Congressional primary.
Everyone upset with this turn of events needs to send a message by sending Richard Burr home in the March 15 primary. Richard Burr endorsed and promoted the appointment of Max Cogburn, the radical Obama judge who was the deciding vote in imposing this crap on us. Cogburn was also the radical judge who threw out our Traditional Marriage amendment. DOWN, DOWN, DOWN with Richard Burr.
Yes, if everyone can remember nothing else about this entire lawsuit fiasco, it is that a Richard Burr judge caused it.
Yep Holding is an Obama republican along with Dick Burr and the rest of the Rino Syndicate. Holding has voted for more government, more Obama Care, more illegal amnesty and never once stood up to Boehner on anything??? .He voted for the Rino Ryan who is worse than Boehner on illegal immigration. He is “almost” as bad as Renee. He does promise/lie to cut, cut, federal spending, though.,..
In the News & record today,Alma Adams who lives in Greensboro is planning on defending her seat in the 13th district. I don’t know the rules on residency.
Adams now resides in the 13th, but plans to run in the 12th (a safe Dem district) where she currently serves. The law does not require a congressional candidate to reside within the district where they run. But in her case, she about a hundred miles from the new 12th.
