#nc-03: Following Taylor Griffin’s money

The McClatchy drivebys have finally caught on to something we knew waaaaaaaay back in November 2015.  Big Money from out of state is betting big on Walter Jones nemesis Taylor Griffin: […] Paul Singer, a New York-based hedge fund manager, has put his money behind challenger Taylor Griffin – one of U.S. Rep. Walter Jones’ primary challengers who came close to forcing the seasoned House member into a runoff two years ago. Singer is the second-largest Republican donor so far in the 2016 election cycle with his contributions to GOP and conservative candidates, groups and committees totaling more than $11.3…

NC-03: National Tea Party leader smacks Griffin over Jones-Iran ad

The political world is buzzing about this ad produced by Republican congressional candidate Taylor Griffin alleging that Walter Jones — of all people — took sides with Barack Obama. It’s succeeded in firing some people up — to the detriment of Griffin.  Here’s Jenny Beth Martin with Tea Party Patriots:  […] “Taylor Griffin’s new campaign advertisement, ‘The Difference’ – in which he falsely claims Rep. Walter Jones ‘is taking the President’s way. Congressman Jones empowered Obama to cut a deal with Iran. Jones caved to Obama’ – is an outrageous distortion, and Griffin should be ashamed of himself for stooping…

NC-03: Wow. Taylor Griffin IS being bankrolled by Wall Street & K Street.

We’ve written extensively about this heightened environment of influence-buying in American politics.  Over in the Third Congressional District GOP primary, we’ve got a clear example of deep-pocketed influence-peddlers in DC and New York trying to buy a congressional seat. We took a look at the Griffin campaign’s October 15 quarterly report to the Federal Elections Commission (FEC).  Here are some of the interesting things we found: Total Receipts – $117,424 Total from Individuals – $105,424 Total Itemized from Individuals – $103,300 Total Contributing (Itemized) – 76 individuals  Total from PACS – $12,000  List of donors includes 17 lobbyists, 15 attorneys…

#nc-03: A split decision on Paul Ryan

Walter Jones has clearly not had John Boehner as a part of his fan club.  There’s been evidence that Boehner and sources close to him have been behind recent primary challenges to Jones. Jones has also been credited with having a major impact on Kevin McCarthy’s decision to back out of the race for speaker.  Now, Jones has tossed in his two cents on speaker-in-waiting Paul Ryan — using words like “bully.” Jones has two primary challengers this year.  One of them — Taylor Griffin — sounded off on Ryan on Facebook this week (Click image below to enlarge):

#NC-03: Jones beating Griffin in money chase

The third quarter campaign finance reports have been filed with the Federal Elections Commission.  If the numbers in those reports are any indication, Walter Jones will be celebrating in November. Primary challenger Taylor Griffin reports raising $117,424 through September 30.  His report indicates he has $105,953 in cash-on-hand as of September 30. Jones reports raising $200,421 through September 30.  He shows $179,443 cash-on-hand as of September 30.   This is a rematch from 2014, where Griffin came close to upsetting the challenger.  In 2014, Griffin raised a total of $323,554. In 2014, Jones raised a total of $703,382.  Griffin benefited…

#nc-03: Some advice for Taylor Griffin

It looks like the GOP primary for US House is not going to look anything like the last go-around.  The Walter Jones campaign got caught flat-footed in 2014 and nearly paid for it.  Jones is cruising along fine with the base in 2016.  He is consistently ranked as the — if not one of the top two — most conservative members of the state’s House delegation.  His confrontations with John Boehner have him looking really good right now — in the wake of Boehner’s resignation announcement. The discontent with Jones is just not there this year.  Taylor Griffin is in…

NC-03: A GOP threeway

Lately, it seems that all of Walter Jones’s campaigns are raucous affairs. DC-based groups dumped millions into his primary race in 2014.  Well, it looks like his 2014 opponent is back for more in 2016 — and is being joined by another challenger. Taylor Griffin has had a lot of success as a politico in DC.  He’s very well-connected in GOPe circles there.  Groups spearheaded by Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol helped him raise all kinds of money last time around, and are likely to do so again this time.  It appears that Team Griffin is running with the same…

FIVE ROOKIES? More changes in the air for NC congressional delegation?

We’ve got three open seats this year — districts 6,7, and 12.  So, we’ll definitely be adding three newcomers to our state’s delegation to DC.  But serious election observers suggest close primary races in the 2nd — held by Renee Ellmers — and the 3rd — held by Walter Jones — could give our state an additional TWO newcomers in the nation’s capital.  In the second district, establishment types are poo-pooing and dismissing the upstart primary campaign of Frank Roche.  He’s low on cash, and has some PR problems lingering from past political ventures.  But Ellmers has created a lot of…
